The dream for this large main floor was an open space with an incredible lake view. The owners asked that it have a casual feel and a long wall of storage and kitchen workspace.

Our design team agreed that reconfiguring the space would make a huge difference to getting that lake view. Our plan involved replacing the single-panel entry door with a massive two-panel 12’ sliding door system.

With a country kitchen aesthetic in mind, we started by laying maple hardwood throughout. We brightened the room by painting the natural pine ceiling in white. On the walls, we installed shiplap paneling. Then we refinished the Douglas Fir beams, restoring them to their natural tone and wood grain.

In an open concept, especially one with a full wall of cabinetry like this one, delineating spaces like the kitchen and sitting area is important. To accomplish this, across from the couch area we designed a beverage centre with a live edge countertop and natural wood cabinets. In the kitchen section, the cabinetry is painted in Dark Pewter by Benjamin Moore and we installed an eye-catching mosaic tile backsplash that’s echoed in the display shelving.

While the island functions as a kitchen workspace, it’s also the dining table, so we wanted it to have table legs rather than a solid island base. To pull this off, we hired a local blacksmith to make wrought-iron legs. Hidden from the eye is the electrical running to each leg for charging devices or using appliances. The island countertop is Ironsbridge Matte by Cambria, which is different from the White Cliff Matte used on the kitchen run. Pendant lights by Curry & Co. are installed over the island and controlled by a dimmer switch so they give bright task lighting for food prep and soft light for dinner parties. The chairs were the finishing touch—they finish the look and are also extremely comfortable chairs for long late night card games.

This was a dramatic transformation, and reveal day was quite an event. Watch the big reveal here.
