The catalyst for the Little Kennisis kitchen was a dream of retiring to this beautiful cottage. The owners wanted to update the kitchen with a high contrast classic design that worked with the existing black appliances. They also wanted to change the awkward layout.
We modified the kitchen layout using aging-in-place techniques to ensure appropriate clearances are there should the owner use a mobility aid in future. We also altered the appliance location for symmetry and moved the sink to the window for a wonderful view of the forest.
To brighten the room we lightened the wall colour and installed a whitewashed tongue-and-groove pine ceiling. A gooseneck barn sconce over the sink and two glass sconces over the island provide extra light.
Barnwood by Benjamin Moore on the main cabinets and Cloud White for the island cabinetry were the perfect complement to the appliances. The black matte hardware ties it all together. Finally, Cambria’s stunning Brittanicca quartz countertop offset the warm grey walls. And we finished the room with a rustic sliding barn door made from locally harvested wood, and a black walnut top on the island.
